Dr. Mike treating a patient

Addressing the lack of health care in Helambu has been a core mission of Helambu Project since its beginning. The region’s remote setting makes it difficult for the ill and injured to reach treatment. Without roads, villagers are forced to walk hours or days to receive treatment at government health posts, which are chronically understaffed and undersupplied. Aside from employing traditional remedies, villagers who cannot seek treatment from government health posts are presented with options beyond their control: heal or succumb to their conditions.

Dr. Mike Steven and Pearl Wight, both medical professionals and original members of Helambu Project UK have led, organized, and inspired roving “Health Camps” throughout Helambu and Baruwa regions. These Health Camps have served hundreds, if not thousands of local people. In the Spring of 2010, Helambu Project and VEC conducted its first Dental Health Camp for villagers, students, and staff at the Pasang Memorial Community Boarding School.
